What are my views on the future of computing?
I have to admit I have never actually been asked this question, but this being said it doesn’t change the fact that I have views and I want to voice them. So whether I’m asked or not I am going to tell you all what I think the future of computing will look like from my point of view.
Two words… The Cloud. Yes I know its been vloged blogged and ranted about for a while now but have you ever thought why? The cloud is here right now, were on it.
Think about how you use your computer today. You sit down at your very messy desk, reach across and switch on your box. You wait a few seconds and then the POST screen gets displayed on your monitor… then the various tests are run… then the windows logo… then a black screen… then the windows sound play way too loud because you forgot to turn your speakers down…. Then finally… after minutes of waiting… you get to your login screen! *yey*. But that’s not it, your not actually working yet are you, your still sat there looking at your desktop… you now have to find the program you want to run and then wait for that to open also!
Anyway you get the picture, the current way of using computers is a pain in the arse, you take 5 minutes booting the thing up and when you finaly get into windows you have to wait another 3 minutes for your applications to load. Well, this is where the cloud makes it all fun and games.
Here is how your computer would work if cloud computing was a reality on desktop PC’s.
You sit down at your still very messy desk, reach across and switch on your box. You wait a few seconds to see the POST screen… and then your computer scans its own memory, internet connection and other devices to check if everything’s ok… then your greeted with your webtop with all of the programs you could ever need neatly organized. Along side your programs you have live stock details, news and whatever else you could ever want all streaming live. Maybe even auto login to remote server admin (random I know). From here it takes seconds to open apps due to the fact your on a super fast internet connection from your 1GB WAN ISP. You get the idea.
The only problem is that we are a long way away from this being the norm in computing. Before we get to the stage I just described we would need many changes in the way we think and the way our technology works. Faster internet connections, unlimited bandwidth, better internet protocols, super secure data encryption, secure data centres with insanely fast access. Yep like I said, a looong way away but we are getting there. Look at google.com/ig, all you have to do is create an account and you can customize your webtop however you like! Have googledocs wherever you go just by logging on with your details, Gmail, advertisements, analytical tools… all wherever you go if you know your login details.
Ill close on this comment. What would you like from The Cloud?
